“Daddy, what’s a volcano?”

Drew looked at his daughter and smiled, in a world gone to hell it was amazing a child could still be innocent. He wondered how long that would last.

“Why do you ask baby-doll?”

“It’s a toy in the kiddy meals, we’ve not done those at school yet!”

“Do you know what lava is?”, Grace nodded, “well, when the Earth can’t keep it under the ground anymore it erupts, erm… spills out, of the ground through a volcano. They’re like a mountain and the lava comes out of the top of it, normally in places like Hawaii”

“WOW!! I wanna see one!!”

“Maybe we will one day angel, maybe we will…”

Very sweet. I liked his patient attempt to explain it. I thought you did well. 🙂

Explaining something that seems to be an “everyday” thing (not that volcanoes are “everyday”) to a young child is no easy task … you captured that in this short scene. Nicely done, and touching. Mine is at http://scottcheck.blogspot.com/2012/06/desolation.html

  5. A nice cosy family chat; the love between father and daughter is great, his patience with her commendable. Alas, If all fathers were like this. Mine is here: http://readinpleasure.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/fridayfictioneers-my-pilot/
